Bettye Lewis

November 15, 1940 — June 29, 2019

Bettye Ann Hall-Lewis was born on November 15, 1940, in Georgiana, Alabama, to the late Sampie Hall and Lelia Crenshaw. Bettye was a beautiful woman of God. The Lord prepared a peaceful place for Bettye’s transition on Saturday, June 29, 2019 in her home surrounded by her loving family.

Preceded her in death was her oldest daughter Joyce; brothers: James Hall, Sampie Hall, Jr., Sonny Hall, Leon Hall and Melvin Poole; and his sister, Bobbie Jean Blackmon.

Bettye was educated in the Butler County School system in Alabama. While attending Georgiana Training School, she was involved in various social clubs including Cheer leading. She graduated in 1958, and received her High School Diploma.

Shortly after graduating high school, she asked her mother if she could attend the "Big Meeting" in Greenville, Alabama. It was in Greenville, she meet the late Lee F. Lewis. They married shortly after. From this union three children were born: Joyce (deceased), Jenifer Lynn, and Sophia Lorriane.

Bettye was a woman of God, transferring her church membership from Ward A.M.E., to Mediator Lutheran Church in the mid-seventies.

Shortly after, she joined the Women of the ELCA group. During fundraisers, Bettye would often work with her long time friend, Rosa Coney on dinner fundraisers, since they both loved cooking.

Dedicated to her family, she was a homemaker during her children's early years. In 1976 she began working at John Greenleaf Whittier School as a Cafeteria Aide. Since the education of her children was important to her, she joined the Whittier Home and School Association.

Bettye attended Temple University during the 1980's to pursue a degree in Social Work. Although she did not receive her degree, all future jobs were related in the field of at-risk adolescent population, and mentally handicapped adults. She remained in the field and retired from The Association of Independent Growth (TAIG).

Bettye leaves to cherish her memory two daughters: Jenifer Lewis and Sophia Lewis-Jones; one grandson, Brandon Anthony-Lee Jones; Michael Wisher; one sister, Barbara Henderson (Tampa, Florida); two brothers: Ronald Hall (Evergreen, Alabama), Donald Hall (Hemingway, South Carolina); a host of nieces and nephews, great and great great nieces and nephews; friends and cousins.
