Frances Nathaline Hutchins

On August 10, 1975, Frances Nathaline Hutchins was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, to John Silvester White and Barbara Ann Hutchins. For 51 years, Frances filled the lives of those around her with love, laughter, strength, honesty, music, good food, and unforgettable memories. On August 15, 2026, Frances was called home at Fox Chase Cancer Center in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

Affectionately known as “Ma-ma” and “Fran,” Frances received her early education at McClure Elementary School and Roberto Clemente Middle School and later attended Olney High School. She worked for the School District of Philadelphia for more than 10 years, encouraging students, supporting their education, and helping ensure their safety.

Determined to continue growing, Frances earned her GED in 2013 through Temple University’s COM Program. After receiving her GED and certification, she continued her career in healthcare, working at several medical facilities caring for patients and the elderly as a CNA. She later joined Meadowview Rehabilitation and Nursing Center, where she found her niche as an Administrative Assistant.

On January 10, 2020, Frances married her love, Lowell Ferrell, in a small, intimate ceremony surrounded by their children and family.

If there was one thing everyone knew about Frances, it was that family was everything.

Mama was a faithful and proud member of the “HutchMob” — if you know, you know! She loved her family fiercely, loudly, and unapologetically. Most importantly, Frances loved the Lord and carried her faith with her throughout life's joys and challenges.

Fran knew how to enjoy life. She loved dancing, cooking, tending to her plants, listening to her music, and spending time at home surrounded by family. Some of her sweetest moments were spent baking with her grandchildren, nieces, and nephews.

And no story about Frances would be complete without mentioning one of her favorite unofficial hobbies: cussing her brothers out! That was Fran. She could fuss at you, tell you exactly what was on her mind, and still make sure you ate before you left.

Frances had thick skin but had a soft heart. She was strong, outspoken, protective, loving, and giving. She did not have to give birth to you for you to become one of her children. Throughout her life, countless young women, family members, and friends found comfort, guidance, correction, laughter, and love in Frances. Too many, she simply became Ma-ma.

Her home and heart always seemed to have room for one more.

Frances understood that life was not always easy, but she loved through it all. She encouraged people, fed them, fussed at them, laughed and danced with them, prayed for them, and reminded them that they belonged. Her legacy is found in the many people who carry a piece of her love with them today.

Frances was preceded in death by her beloved daughter, Victoria Ivette Hutchins, and her father, John Silvester White.

Frances leaves her beautiful legacy of love to her husband, Lowell Ferrell; mother, Barbara Hutchins; son, Robert Hutchins; daughters, Drucilla Hutchins, Sierra Hygrant, and Imani Hutchins; siblings, Spencer Hutchins, Tayari Hutchins, Wilbur Childs, and Charles Hutchins; grandchildren, Drew and Demi Hutchins; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, bonus children, extended family, and friends whose lives are forever better because Frances was part of them.

While we mourn because we will miss her, we also celebrate a fruitful life filled with family, faith, resilience, laughter, music, and an abundance of love.

Frances's legacy is not measured simply by the years she lived, but by the people she loved. It lives in her children and grandchildren, in every bonus child she welcomed as her own, and in every person who experienced the warmth of her heart.

That was our Frances. That was Ma-ma. Strong, loving, outspoken, unforgettable—and forever ours.

The HutchMob will never be quite the same without her, but because of the love she gave us, Ma-ma will always be with us.
